And the audio recording came out well, so I’m posting it here for anyone who’s interested in various web marketing tactics and how they apply to service professionals like architects.
So far PodCamp West is chaotic but fun. The setting in the Swedish American Hall is a distinct contrast to the subject matter, as you can see from the carved thrones for the panelists. I must have been looking up at the balcony when this picture was taken. Stefan swiped it from Flickr, so I can’t give credit (or blame, for that matter) to the photographer.

In spite of the fact that I totalled my car on the drive down to Ontario, the Podcast and Portable Media Expo at the end of September was the most fun I’ve had all year. (Well, okay, the most fun at a business event.) I put a lot of effort into preparing, including hand-pressing buttons with the logos/album art from my favorite podcasts.

Yes, my qualification for giving a presentation on “Creating and Keeping Raving Fans” is that I’m a raving fan myself. And after narrowly avoiding violent death, the emphasis was definitely on “raving,” as you can guess from my slightly glazed expression in Paolo Tosolini’s photo from the speakers’ reception on September 28th.

The reason I haven’t blogged about this sooner is that I’ve spent most of the past month dealing with the fallout of the car accident and the search for a new car. (Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a used 4-door sedan with a manual transmission?)

So here, at last, is the link to the “Creating and Keeping Raving Fans” presentation page, which includes my slides in multiple formats and the collected answers I got to “What makes you a fan?” Unfortunately, there’s no recording, as both the Expo’s professionals and Yours Truly messed that part up.

As I said, I had a great time at the Expo. I got to hook up with some of my favorite podcasters (e.g. Tee Morris, Heidi Miller, Shel Holtz, CC Chapman) and show off my Podcast Asylum white coat. I shared a hotel room with Heather Gorringe of the absolutely hysterical Wiggly Wigglers podcast and got a ride home with Martin McKeay of the Network Security podcast.

Registration for next year’s PME opens in 2007. I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in podcasting.

I had a great time presenting for the Bay Area Consultants Network on July 28th, and I don’t know why I’ve taken so long to put the link to the handout and slides here, especially when I got permission to quote the note I got from the organizer: “Another home run! You blew the socks off the crowd!”

The good news is: you get all the slides, even the out-takes, and the interactive handout, on the BACN presentation page. The bad news is: the audio recording is full of static. Painfully so. Turns out there was a bad wire in the external mic, not picked up during the short “is everything working” test I did before going on. So the file is there if you really want to subject yourself to it, but I’m not going to put it into the feed.

The audience at this presentation was great. My favorite question, in response to the clips I played from some of my favorite podcasts, was “Do you have to have an accent to do a podcast?”

After I heard that, I felt doubly compelled to edit the recording of the class carefully, so I spent hours last night removing the remarkable number of uhhs and ummms committed by Yours Truly. (I don’t do that while presenting, so I’m not sure why I do it on a conference call. Not enough rehearsing?) That trimming, and removing intrusive sounds from the conferencing system and long pauses, cut the hour-long teleclass into a 46-minute MP3 which I hope will be easier on the ears. (But I need to ask Jeremy Hague of Skylook why recorded calls come in at 24000 and not 41000 MHz.)

(I didn't get a chance to listen to FIR 111 (http://forimmediaterelease.biz/index.php/weblog/the_hobson_holtz_report_podcast_111_february_13_2006/) until Tuesday evening.)

After I heard that, I felt doubly compelled to edit the recording of the class carefully, so I spent hours last night removing the remarkable number of uhhs and ummms committed by Yours Truly. (I don't do that while presenting, so I'm not sure why I do it on a conference call. Not enough rehearsing?) That trimming, and removing intrusive sounds from the conferencing system and long pauses, cut the hour-long teleclass into a 46-minute MP3 which I hope will be easier on the ears. (But I need to ask Jeremy Hague of Skylook (http://www.skylook.biz) why recorded calls come in at 24000 and not 41000 MHz.)
